States are Mandating a Safe, Secure Disposal of e-Waste | e-Cycle

e-Waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the U.S. If electronic devices are not properly recycled, the toxic chemicals contained inside these devices can cause serious environmental and health concerns. While there have been numerous attempts to develop Federal laws on the disposal of e-Waste, there are currently no Federal mandates in place. In many jurisdictions, the disposal of toxic e-Waste in landfills is still legal, causing severe environmental damage to the surrounding communities. As a result, various states have begun developing laws surrounding the secure disposal of e-Waste.

According to the EPA, electronics such as CRT monitors, cell phones and mobile devices test “hazardous” and require special handling for disposal. Improper disposal can cause toxic chemicals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, located inside these devices to seep into the soil and contaminate the groundwater. In fact, one mobile phone has enough toxins to contaminate 40,000 gallons of water.

25 states have passed legislation mandating statewide e-Waste recycling while several more are passing new laws or improving legislation. Most recently, Colorado’s Governor signed a bill banning the dumping of electronic equipment in landfills and requiring the state to utilize certified recyclers. Six other states introduced e-Waste legislation in 2011. Currently, statewide e-Waste recycling laws cover 65 percent of the U.S. population.

New York State instituted the Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act last year and while there is room for improvement, the program appears to be working. Fairly aggressive targets were set for the program and though the amount of e-Waste collected has not been totaled, the number of collection options grew 77 percent in the last year. Recyclers and local governments report that the increased ease and convenience in recycling caused an increase in the quantity of e-Waste collected in 2011.

e-Stewards, a leading global program, allows businesses that dispose of their old electronic equipment to easily identify recycling companies that adhere to the highest standards of environmental responsibility and employee protection. An e-Stewards Certification requires a recycler to meet rigorous environmental, health and safety requirements while prohibiting the improper disposal of toxic waste in landfills and shipment overseas. Recently, e-Cycle LLC became the first mobile phone buyback and recycling company in the world to become e-Stewards Certified.

e-Cycle provides businesses a safe and environmentally friendly method for the disposal of used mobile phones and devices. Assisting organizations in taking a more responsible, secure and profitable approach to wireless recycling, e-Cycle purchases used cell phones and tablets that still retain value and recycles all others at no charge through an EPA-registered facility. A rigorous multi-step data deletion process permanently removes confidential data stored on these devices. Not only does e-Cycle maintain a strict zero landfill policy, their e-Stewards Certification also ensures dedication to upholding the highest global standards for environmental responsibility.

Many states either lack adequate regulations for this relatively new waste stream, or lack effective enforcement of new e-waste regulations. However, with electronic waste representing 70 percent of toxins in our landfills, policies need to be put in place to battle this growing issue. As more states begin to implement e-Waste legislation, e-Cycle provides enterprises with a secure and profitable solution for mobile phone recycling and reuse. Find out more at www.e-Cycle.com.

e-Cycle Encourages Responsible Electronics Recycling Following Rescue of Child Laborers in Hazardous Recycling Operation

Early last week, 17 child laborers, ranging in age from 6 to 13, were rescued from a hazardous recycling operation in New Delhi, India. Activists claim that the children were separating computer parts, exposing them to a multitude of toxic elements. In response to this incident, e-Cycle, a leading mobile buyback and recycling company, is encouraging businesses to use an e-Stewards-certified company for their e-cycling efforts to ensure their e-waste is recycled in the safest, most responsible and environmentally friendly manner.

The EPA estimates that 70 to 80 percent of  “reputable” electronics recycling companies in the U.S. are shipping e-waste into "toxic wastelands" in developing countries. Using bonded and sometimes slave labor, workers are exposed to toxic chemicals contained in electronic devices such as lead, zinc, mercury and flame retardants.  Open air burning of plastics, fumes inhaled from acid washes used to abstract precious metals and lead leached into the drinking water from Lithium-Ion batteries poison the local populations.

Created by the Basel Action Network (BAN), the e-Stewards® certification program is the only electronics recycler certification program that prohibits the export of hazardous waste to developing countries, requires a certified ISO 14001 and R2 environmental management system, includes industry-specific worker health and safety requirements, bans the use of prison labor in handling of sensitive data and can be used internationally.

e-Cycle, the first mobile phone buyback and recycling company to achieve e-Stewards certification, collects used mobile devices from businesses and organizations, reimbursing them for devices that retain value and recycling all others at no charge. The information on every phone is permanently deleted or destroyed using the industry's most rigorous data security measures.

Why Partner with an e-Stewards Certified Mobile Recycler? | e-Cycle

More companies are making the effort to “go green” and are responsibly recycling their used and outdated electronic devices. However with the hazardous chemicals and confidential data contained inside of these devices, recycling e-Waste is more involved than taking your used mobile phones and tablets to a recycling center or trading them to reseller companies online.

Now more than ever, it is essential for businesses to partner with a credible electronics recycler and ensure that their mobile phones and tablets, as well as the sensitive data stored inside, are recycled properly. Companies need to research their current asset recovery companies and their processes. Partnering with the wrong electronics recycler can be extremely hazardous not only for the environment but also for the business.

Many organizations may think that they are acting responsibly when recycling with an electronic buyback company when in fact, their mobile devices could be causing severe damage to the environment. The EPA reports that 70-80% of “reputable” recyclers are sending e-Waste to remote villages in developing countries where the use of cheap and sometimes slave labor is used to reclaim the precious metals inside electronic devices.

The developing countries overseas are being destroyed by the overwhelming amount of e-Waste shipped from electronics recyclers in the United States. Once the e-Waste is dumped in these countries, migrant workers use primitive technologies such as open air burning or acid baths to remove the precious metals. Not only do the extraction methods cause substantial harm to the environment, the inhalation of the toxic fumes emitted can cause significant health problems and even death for the local men, women and children in these regions.

In addition to the impact e-Waste has on developing nations, the improper handling of electronic devices also poses a threat to the confidential business information stored on these devices. Many enterprises rely on corporate-liable smartphones and tablets for their day-to-day business and consequently mobile devices contain an abundance of private data. For these reasons, businesses must investigate their mobile recycling partners and trust that they will provide the utmost data security and deletion processes.

The Basel Action Network, a global organization dedicated to ending toxic trade and electronic dumping overseas, developed the e-Stewards Certification in an effort to eliminate these growing issues.

e-Stewards, a leading international program, allows businesses that dispose of their old electronic equipment to easily identify recycling companies that adhere to the highest standards of environmental responsibility, data security and employee protection. An e-Stewards Certification requires a recycler to meet rigorous environmental, mobile data deletion and health and safety requirements. This strictly regulated program requires yearly audits to ensure that the high e-Stewards standards are continuously being met.

Earlier this year, e-Cycle LLC became the first mobile phone buyback and recycling company in the world to become e-Stewards Certified. Ranked the #68 Most Promising Company in America by Forbes and the #5 fastest growing environmental services company in the U.S. by Inc., e-Cycle helps organizations take a more responsible, secure and profitable approach to wireless recycling. e-Cycle purchases used mobile phones and tablets that still retain value and recycles all others at no charge through an EPA-registered facility. The data on every reusable phone undergoes a rigorous, multi-step data deletion and auditing process to permanently remove confidential information. The e-Stewards Certification guarantees their clients’ security by removing all data from every device, providing financial compensation for devices that holds resale value and ensuring devices that no longer holding any value are recycled or disposed of in ways that protect the environment. For more information visit www.e-Cycle.com.

Businesses need to be aware of the data security and recycling practices their asset recovery partners utilize. Using e-Stewards Certified recyclers is the only way to ensure your organization is protecting not only their sensitive company information but also the environment.

Preventing Mobile Phone QR Code Data Security Issues for Enterprise and End-Users | e-Cycle

The latest trend in mobile marketing, QR Codes or Quick Response Codes, is also becoming the newest pitfall in mobile phone security. Smartphones quickly scan the square, two-dimensional barcodes and immediately direct users to a website, subscribe them to an email list or download additional marketing materials. The fast and convenient solution makes QR codes the perfect way to connect with businesses during an event or tradeshow and consumers on the go. However, cybercriminals have also begun to use QR codes to infect smartphones and obtain sensitive information from these mobile devices.

Mobile phones and tablets contain an overwhelming amount of confidential data. Sensitive emails, business contacts and passwords are all available on cell phones and pads. Making this information susceptible to hackers can be disastrous and while most people have learned to think twice before clicking on a suspicious link that was emailed to them, they do not exercise the same level of caution when it comes to QR codes. This lack of protection makes QR codes a growing risk in mobile security.

Since these QR codes are still relatively new technology, security measures and protections have not been effectively developed to ensure protection for the users. Both the consumers scanning the QR codes as well as the companies developing this technology need to understand the security threats and watch for the warning signs.

Users should be aware of the mobile security risk that QR codes pose and view the website they are directed to before scanning. Various QR code applications allow the option to preview the link prior to scanning the barcode. This precaution prevents the user from scanning a code when the URL appears suspicious. Often times when a QR code is fraudulent, it will lead the user directly to a login screen. Cybercriminals use this form as a trap to retrieve personal information. In most instances, personal information should not be required when scanning a QR code. Legitimate codes will automatically complete a request or will only require contact information for subscriptions.

Businesses utilizing QR codes also have a responsibility to ensure their codes are safe and do not end up getting hacked. In order to ensure the security of their customers' sensitive data, businesses need to provide context for the QR codes when it appears on marketing materials. This will provide users with peace of mind when the link they were expecting appears. Companies should also reveal the exact URL where the user will be directed after scanning. Make sure all the steps to the process are transparent so it does not appear your organization is attempting to take advantage of the user.

As technology continually evolves, hackers develop new and different ways to infiltrate the confidential information contained on cell phones and tablets. Though QR codes provide an ideal marketing solution for businesspeople and consumers on the go, they are becoming yet another portal cybercriminals are using to steal information. While mobile device security is still being developed for these barcodes, users need to be aware of this new area of risk to take the proper precautions when scanning QR codes to smartphones.

e-Cycle CEO Christopher Irion Addresses the Challenges of Building a Mobile Recycling Company

When Christopher Irion launched mobile phone data security and recycling company e-Cycle in 2005, he was confronted with the challenge of managing triple-digit growth while establishing a best-in-class company culture. Over seven years later, Irion continues to deal with his company’s rapid growth and the obstacles it brings. Recently, SmartBusiness spoke with Irion to discuss his secrets on finding the right people to fulfill his passion and overcoming growing pains.

“I feel blessed that [e-Cycle] can grow over 100 percent per year, but as opportunistic as growth is, it’s also a big challenge for us,” says Irion.

Shortly after starting his cell phone recycling business, Irion realized that having a strong management structure would support growth. When a business has only one employee reporting to the CEO, the system will be effective, however when a business grows to an 85 plus member organization, multiple supervisors need to be put in place. Therefore, setting up an efficient managerial infrastructure was key to e-Cycle’s success.

e-Cycle was founded on a passion for the environment, a love of technology and a devotion to charitable giving. Irion’s passion for these three values was able to keep him going during the rough patches and when times got hard. When new business owners are trying to get a business off the ground, they may be working until 2 a.m. every night. They may be anxious about how they will find their next client or how they will make payroll a year down the road. It’s their passion that gets the founders through the bumpy period of establishing a new company. Passion will win over prospective clients because they see the enthusiasm and the drive to meet their needs. Passion will evoke dedication in employees because they share the company vision and will work hard to help accomplish it.

According to Irion, business should narrow down the company’s values and keep them at the core of all that the organization represents. Instill these values in your employees and ensures that all aspects of the company’s culture revolve around these core values. Always keep your client first and do what’s in their best interests. Building this idea at the core of your company culture will always put you ahead of the competition.

e-Cycle Named “Cool Vendor” by Leading Analyst Firm

Report highlights interesting new and innovative vendors, products and services that are impacting Information Technology Asset Management (ITAM) in 2012.

e-Cycle, a global company focusing on mobile buyback, data protection and recycling, today announced it has been recognized in the “Cool Vendors in ITAM, 2012”[1] report by Gartner Inc.

e-Cycle is among the Cool Vendors highlighted for offering innovative and intriguing technologies or solutions. e-Cycle protects sensitive data for companies while recycling their mobile devices to the highest standards of financial and environmental responsibility. In addition, e-Cycle is the world’s only mobile buyback and recycling company to earn the stringent and independent e-Stewards certification.

“We are pleased to have been named one of Gartner’s 2012 Cool Vendors, as it is a testament to the hard work our employees undertake daily to make a difference for our customers,” said e-Cycle CEO Christopher Irion. “The report recognizes what we see daily: Organizations face an enormous looming ITAD challenge in the rapidly growing area of mobile devices. We believe our secure, cost-effective and environmentally responsible approach to wireless recycling sets us apart in today’s marketplace.”

Among the key findings in Gartner’s report is the following: “The global ITAD market has historically been largely focused on workstations (PC desktops and laptops) and traditional data center assets (servers, storage systems, telecommunication equipment and so on). Yet, our research indicates that most organizations face an enormous looming ITAD challenge in the rapidly growing area of mobile devices. For example, Gartner estimates that, in 2012, about 226 million mobile phones will be retired from use by businesses worldwide (this excludes consumer retirements), and that by 2015, that number will reach about 289 million. These numbers will be further compounded by the relatively nascent (from the perspective of disposition) tablet market, which is also projected to grow at a torrid pace.

“It is on this specific mobile device market (mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, etc.) that e-Cycle has exclusively focused its disposition business.”

Disclaimer: Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings. e-Cycle Showcasing Responsible Mobile Reuse and Recycling at BlackBerry World

e-Cycle Showcasing Responsible Mobile Reuse and Recycling at BlackBerry World, Only Mobile Buyback and Recycling Company to Earn e-Stewards Certification

e-Cycle will be at BlackBerry World™ to demonstrate how companies can achieve responsible mobile reuse and recycling that ensures financial savings, sound environmental stewardship and the guaranteed protection of sensitive data.

April 30, 2012

e-Cycle will be at BlackBerry World™ to demonstrate how companies can achieve responsible mobile reuse and recycling that ensures financial savings, sound environmental stewardship and the guaranteed protection of sensitive data.

As the world's only mobile buyback and recycling company to earn the stringent and independent e-Stewards certification, e-Cycle protects sensitive data while recycling mobile devices to the highest standards of financial and environmental responsibility. e-Cycle will review its services and success stories at booth #148 at BlackBerry World ™ 2012 from May 1 to 3, which takes place at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Fla.

In addition, e-Cycle Founder and CEO Christopher Irion will be available to discuss the growing need for mobile recycling action plans that protect the environment and prevent data leaks.

"Companies are faced with the increasingly complex task of managing the turnover of mobile phone and device use throughout their organizations," Irion said. "Many believe they are recycling, reselling or retiring their mobile devices properly when they actually are not. The reality is millions of old mobile devices continue to end up in landfills or find their way into the resale market with sensitive organization data remaining intact."

Because it holds the distinction of having the e-Stewards certification, e-Cycle can help organizations develop mobile recycling strategies that:

  •     Guarantee safety and security by removing all data from every device.
  •     Provide financial compensation for devices that continue to their hold resale value.
  •     Ensure devices no longer holding any value are recycled or disposed of in ways that protect the environment.

"Mobile asset recovery and reuse makes good business sense because the revenues can greatly offset the cost of upgrading to latest technologies," Irion said. "It is also important from an environmental standpoint because extending the life of wireless devices reduces energy and carbon emissions. Organizations need to ensure their devices are recycled securely and responsibly."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that only 14 to 18 percent of electronic devices are recycled and that 70 to 80 percent of electronics recycling companies in the U.S. export electronic waste to developing countries, poisoning the environment and the local population.

Research also reveals startling discoveries regarding the failure to protect sensitive mobile data. In Electronic Retention: What Does Your Mobile Phone Reveal About You, researchers found that every mobile device they acquired in the secondary market contained user information.

A study by the Ponemon Institute and Websense of more than 4,000 organizations in 12 countries found 77 percent use mobile devices in the workplace, but only 39 percent had security controls in place. More than half of the companies experienced data loss because of unsecured mobile devices, including laptops, smartphones, USB devices and tablets.

"It is abundantly clear that organizations need to carefully implement a mobile recycling action plan as part of their telecom endpoint data security process," Irion said.
