Consumers Hesitant to Recycle and Resell Used Cell Phones

Nearly 60 percent of people who do not recycle used cell phones refrain from doing so because they don’t know where to recycle their devices or they don’t trust that the data will be destroyed, according to an online poll conducted by Earth911 for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI).

The poll was conducted on Earth911’s website from June 20 to September 9, 2013 and received responses from more than 900 individuals. The results support the findings of the U.S. International Trade Commission’s study that indicated only 25 percent of all household used electronics are recycled.

As consumers enthusiastically await the arrival their new Apple iPhone 5s or 5c, it is important to keep in mind the urgent need to responsibly sell and recycle old cell phones to protect their data and environment. For every 42 cell phones recycled, enough energy is saved to power an average household for an entire year.

Why Consumers Aren’t Recycling Their Cell Phones

According to the poll, 21 percent of respondents say they have not recycled their old mobile device because they keep it as a backup, while 20 percent say they just earth911 statisticshaven’t gotten around to it. Thirty percent indicated that they don’t know where to recycle their cell phone and 29 percent of respondents say they are worried about data security risks associated with recycling.

To ensure the personal data on your cell phone is protected, e-Cycle mobile buyback and recycling recommends consumers avoid selling their devices on eBay, Craiglist and to be very wary of online buyback companies or kiosks in shopping malls that offer to purchase used electronics devices. Often they provide no assurance of data deletion and have been known to resell wireless devices with private data still remaining. e-Cycle encourages consumers to only use electronics recyclers who do more than just a factory reset for data deletion, which does not remove all personal data. Residual personal data often remains, stored in hidden menus, even after a mobile phone has been brought back to factory settings. Be certain your recycler is doing more than a simple factory reset by asking questions and carefully reviewing their terms and conditions.

e-Cycle urges reluctant consumers to only sell or recycle their used mobile phones and tablets with an e-Stewards certified recycling company to ensure their data and the environment are protected. e-Stewards requires certified recyclers to adhere to the highest global standards of environmental protection and has stringent data security measures as part of its certification. e-Stewards certified recyclers are required to delete or destroy all the data from the devices they receive.

e-Cycle: Five Common Mistakes to Avoid when Creating a BYOD Policy

With bring your own device (BYOD) programs exploding worldwide, enterprises are searching for the perfect solution for managing and securing employee-liable devices. Implementing a BYOD policy is tricky because each program must be customized to meet the specific needs for each company and there is no catch-all solution. As a global leader in the mobile buyback and recycling industry, e-Cycle shares five common BYOD mistakes that can lead to disgruntled workers, lower productivity as well as higher costs and mobile security headaches.

1. No Policy or Monitoring
BYOD’s major strength is the flexibility it lends to employees; however, businesses must be prepared for the liability that accompanies it. Creating a BYOD policy with specific guidelines for who owns the data, device and software, how the expenses are distributed and what happens to the device when it is lost or stolen will help to avoid legal matters and protect your company.

2. Excessive Mobile Security
Multiple passwords, remote device wipes and location trackers are important features to protect mobile data, but requiring over-the-top security features will leave employees soured on BYOD. Instead, search for solutions that enhance productivity and increase employee satisfaction, while still protecting sensitive mobile data. But be careful, restoring factory settings and remote wiping is not a guarantee of data removal. Often times sensitive information still remains on wireless devices including names, contact information, pin numbers, emails and even photos. A shocking study revealed confidential information was found on devices purchased on eBay.

3. Too Few Options
BYOD was intended to empower employees with the ability to choose the devices and apps they want. A program that is too limited may lower company morale and cause employees to develop their own workarounds to utilize the apps they prefer, which increases the likelihood of a breach. Give your employees enough options to boost productivity and create a positive output for the company.

4. Too Many Options
Managing mobile business data through numerous devices and carriers can quickly become a nightmare for an enterprise’s IT or mobility department. BYOD is meant to be beneficial to both the business and the employee. Offering three to four mainstream devices will please employees and allow the IT/mobility department to effectively manage mobile security, creating applications and troubleshooting. Be wary of devices and applications that are known to be traps for malware.

5. Not Thinking it Through
As the newest mobile trend, many companies are diving head first into BYOD without thinking the process through. Enterprises need to ensure that BYOD makes sense for the needs of the company and employees. BYOD can save businesses money; however, there are often hidden expenses that accompany this new trend like software licensing, mobile security, device management and regulatory compliance. These are all expenses that need to be considered when deciding to make the switch to BYOD.

6. Partner with a Trusted Mobile Buyback and Recycling Company
Encourage or mandate that your employees discard their used personally-owned devices securely and responsibly by utilizing a trusted wireless buyback and recycling company that has proven processes for data deletion. There are numerous consumer buyback companies that claim data protection, however, provide poor data security processes and unsecure facilities. Discourage employees from selling their used mobile devices on eBay and Craigslist.

Vetting and recommending a secure and proven mobile buyback and recycling partner to compensate your employees while protecting their sensitive data and the environment is critical to help negate data breaches and to protect your corporate reputation. Additionally, utilize e-Stewards® certified electronics recyclers who are rigorously audited each year to ensure they uphold globally-recognized standards for data security, environmental protection and worker safety.

e-Cycle’s Tips on How To Pack Cell Phones for Safe Handling When Shipping for Recycling

Ensure your package of cell phones and other electronics do not get damaged during shipping.

e-Cycle is a cell phone buyback and recycling company that provides free shipping as part of our wireless asset-recovery services. To ensure our clients understand the proper way to prepare cell phones, tablets and other wireless devices for mail delivery, we created the following video and helpful shipping tips to make certain our clients’ mobile devices are not damaged during delivery.

  1.  Do not pack more than 50 wireless devices per box. Boxes weighing over 40 pounds have an increased risk of damage during transit and create a safety issue for package handlers. This includes cell phones, tablets, phone chargers and other accessories.
  2. Do not use a box larger than a copy paper box. Large boxes make it difficult for package handlers to maneuver and carry the electronics shipment, increasing the possibility of your package and mobile phones and tablets being damaged during shipping.
  3. Use newspaper or other soft packing materials to protect your wireless devices. Surrounding your mobile devices with soft packing material creates a shock absorber in case your package is dropped or roughly handled during transit.
  4. Tape all box seams and then tape cross-wise. Tapping seams will secure your box and keep it from ripping during transit.
  5. Loose cell phone batteries must be individually wrapped or have covered terminals. A fire can occur if the terminals of loose batteries rub together and create a spark. For safety reasons, it is important to tape these terminals or put them in individual zip lock bags.

Following these five steps will keep your wireless devices and the confidential information they store secure during shipping. For more information on e-Cycle’s mobile recycling services and data security practices, visit e-Cycle.com.

The Columbus Foundation Features e-Cycle Mobile Buyback and Recycling Founders

The Columbus Foundation featured e-Cycle wireless asset recovery and recycling founders, Chris and Tonia Irion, in their summer newsletter. The article, “Celebrating Homegrown Success Stories,” discusses how the Irions turned their passions for charitable giving, protecting the environment and technology into a successful business.

Founded in 2005, e-Cycle purchases nearly 500 types of used mobile phones and tablets that retain value and recycles all others at no charge. e-Cycle was the first wireless recycling company in the world to achieve e-Stewards certification, the global gold standard for environmental stewardship.

The article highlights one of e-Cycle’s most important core values, charitable giving:

In keeping with their goal of charitable giving, the Irions help companies maximize the amount of money they raise through mobile buyback and write a check directly to the charity of the company’s choice on its behalf.

“We’ve raised millions for our clients and their charities of choice and kept millions of devices out of landfills. Just this year alone, we’ll keep roughly four to five million phones and accessories out of landfills,” Chris said.

In January 2013, the Irions established the e-Cycle Foundation of The Columbus Foundation. e-Cycle clients can donate directly to the foundation and then suggest a charity to support with all or some of the money they recoup from their old devices.
