Best Practices to Secure Data When Responsibly Selling and Recycling Used Wireless Devices | e-Cycle

Every day thousands of used mobile devices are being replaced as businesses and organizations upgrade to the newest mobile phones and tablets. Many of these still functioning devices end up collecting dust in desk drawers, storage closets or worse, local landfills. In addition, these used wireless devices frequently still contain confidential information. If you do not have a careful asset recovery and recycling plan in place, the confidential information contained on your devices may become exposed.

Implementing a strategic and secure method for recycling outdated smartphones and tablets will not only protect telecom budgets but also private company data. e-Cycle outlines a few best practices to ensure sensitive business data remains secure during mobile buyback and recycling of retired devices.

  • Do not trust your employees or third-party software with data deletion. Even after resetting a device to factory settings, private data can still remain on the device including contact information, passwords and pin numbers. Partner with certified mobile phone buyback and recycling companies that have rigorous processes in place to permanently remove the data as well as secondary quality assurance testing. e-Cycle is the first mobile phone buyback and recycling company to achieve e-Stewards, ISO 14000 and R2 certification and provide the industry’s highest standards and practices for protecting your private mobile data.
  • Read your mobile phone buyback and recycling partner’s terms and conditions and ensure they guarantee complete data security. Although many recyclers claim mobile data deletion, most accept no responsibility for data deletion and state that it is the sole responsibility of the organization. Certified mobile buyback and recycling companies will guarantee specific mobile data wiping processes, quality assurance practices, facility security, employee screening policies and liability insurance.
  • Ensure your mobile phone buyback and recycling company tests for active phone lines. Accidentally retiring devices that still have active service plans causes a serious security risk and financial losses due to continued data transmissions and carrier service charges. Be sure your chosen wireless recycling company includes active phone line testing as part of their services and that they provide a complete list of devices (with phone numbers) that are found active.
  • Work with e-Stewards certified mobile asset-recovery and recycling companies. The U.S. EPA estimates 70 to 80 percent of electronics recyclers directly or indirectly ship e-waste to developing countries. Once there, unethical methods such as open-acid baths and open-air burning are used to extract precious metals and dispose of e-waste. Additionally, organized criminals in these countries often collect the private data found on mobile smartphones and tablets. Make certain your chosen wireless recycling company adheres to the highest environmental standards for the responsible recycling and reuse of wireless devices.
  • Avoid “destroy only” policies. Destroying reusable mobile phones and tablets is bad for the environment and your budget. In an effort to battle the mobile security threats that retired devices pose, some companies develop a mobile ‘destroy-only’ policy. This physical destruction of reusable devices results in lost revenues, additional disposal expenses, energy waste and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Extending the service life of a mobile phone from one to four years makes a 40 percent more positive environmental impact than recycling alone.

If your company has a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy in place, make certain employees discard their used personally owned devices securely and responsibly by partnering with a trusted wireless buyback and recycling company that purchases devices directly from individuals. There are numerous less-than-reputable consumer buyback companies that offer little assurance of data security and resell used mobile devices on eBay, Craigslist and other online sites. Many of these buyback companies work in unsecure buildings and do not conduct security checkpoints or employee background screenings. Finding a secure mobile buyback and recycling partner that will compensate your employees for protecting your sensitive data and the environment is critical to keeping your sensitive data out of the wrong hands and protecting your corporate reputation and brand.

e-Cycle helps businesses take a more responsible, secure and profitable approach to mobile phone and tablet recycling by purchasing wireless devices that retain value and recycling all others at no charge. The information on every device is deleted or destroyed using the industry’s most rigorous data security measures. In January 2012, e-Cycle became the first mobile buyback and recycling company in the world to become e-Stewards certified. e-Cycle Mobile Buyback and Recycling Named Top Central Ohio Workplace for 2013

e-Cycle is honored to have been selected as a top place to work in Central Ohio by Columbus CEO Magazine and 10TV Top Workplaces. e-Cycle was among only 50 Central Ohio companies to earn the award and recognition for having an exceptional work environment.

The rigorous selection process for the award began in late 2012 and included surveying the employees of the nominated companies. The Top Workplaces finalists were determined through employee feedback alone. The winners were recognized at an awards reception at COSI in Columbus, Ohio, on April 18, 2013.

“What makes us most proud of this recognition is the fact that it came from our employees, the very people who contribute to our success day in and day out,” said Christopher Irion, e-Cycle CEO. “We’ve worked hard to create a culture in which our employees can thrive in their careers and feel empowered to provide solutions that help our customers address the challenges of responsible and cost-effective mobile recycling.”

The Top Workplaces recognition comes at a time of significant growth and expansion for e-Cycle. The award follows what have been several years of record growth for our company, both in terms of revenue and our workforce. In late 2012, we moved our corporate headquarters from Hilliard to New Albany. The move has allowed us to expand our Hilliard location, where we maintain our mobile recycling operations. Today, e-Cycle has more than 100 employees.

e-Cycle Mobile Buyback and Recycling Receives Two Global Business Excellence Awards

The entire e-Cycle team is honored to have received two Global Business Excellence Awards for Outstanding Green Initiatives and Outstanding Service. e-Cycle earned the international honors for its commitment to protecting the environment and delivering high-quality services to businesses, organizations and consumers.

“We very much appreciate the global recognition that we’ve received for our efforts,” said Christopher Irion, e-Cycle CEO. “It is a testament not only to the value we are bringing to businesses and consumers alike, but also to our commitment to doing so in the most environmentally responsible way.”

The Global Business Excellence Awards, based in the United Kingdom, recognize business excellence around the globe and across all sectors, including private and public companies as well as charity organizations that are working smarter to create a business edge.

In issuing the Outstanding Service award, the Global Business Excellence Awards commended e-Cycle for its rewarding approach to mobile recycling, “e-Cycle has developed the perfect solution for the recycling of the millions and millions of discarded wireless mobile devices that are thrown away every year in the U.S. It buys old devices from companies, rebuilds the ones in working order for the third-world market and disposes of the remaining ones in an environmentally friendly way. By cutting the telecom budget for companies, protecting the environment and helping poorer countries get access to mobile devices, e-Cycle keeps everyone happy. The high quality of the e-Cycle scheme is a wake-up call and a great role model for the recycling industry in other countries.”

In the category of Outstanding Green Initiative, the Global Business Excellence Awards referenced e-Cycle’s approach to environmental responsibility. “By working to the highest technical standards in the recycling of old mobile devices, e-Cycle has to be applauded for protecting the planet from pollutants and keeping electronic trash out of landfill sites. It pays companies for their old wireless mobile devices and through a meticulous process, it securely clears data and reconditions working devices for export to third-world countries. Any leftover waste is either shredded or recycled. Absolutely nothing ends up in landfill sites. This is about as green as it gets.”

Co-founded by Tonia and Christopher Irion in 2005, e-Cycle provides wireless buyback, recycling and data deletion services for enterprise and government organizations.  e-Cycle collects used mobile devices, reimbursing businesses for devices that retain value and recycling all others at no charge. The EPA estimates that 150 million, or four per second, used wireless devices end up in U.S. landfills each year and that e-waste is responsible for 70 percent of the toxic substances in our landfills today. The lead leached from one cell phone’s lithium ion battery in a landfill can contaminate up to 40,000 gallons of water. e-Cycle helps businesses and organizations take a more responsible, secure and cost effective approach to wireless recycling. e-Cycle collects used cell phones and tablets from businesses and major organizations, reimbursing them for mobile devices that retain value and recycling others at no charge. The private data stored on these devices is permanently removed through the industry’s most rigorous data deletion process.

In January 2012, e-Cycle became the first mobile phone buyback and recycling company in the world to become e-Stewards Certified. e-Stewards is the globally recognized certification that e-Cycle consistently upholds the highest standards for responsible recycling and reuse of electronic equipment, worker safety and data security. e-Cycle maintains a strict zero landfill policy.
