Environmental Compliant RecyclingThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 100 million cell phones are discarded each year. When dismantled, their internal metal components translate into 65,000 tons of waste containing lead, cadmium, arsenic, beryllium, mercury and other toxic heavy metals and carcinogens. Tens of millions of old phones end up in landfills or incinerators annually, where toxics can find their way into our drinking water and air. Cell phones consist of approximately 50 percent metal, including precious metals like gold, silver, and copper, but also hazardous materials like mercury and lead; 40 percent plastic; and 10 percent rubber. Cell Phone Batteries are also highly toxic. Most wireless devices can be re-used or recycled at a profit, but at least 90 percent of all retired cell phones are not. e-Cycle manages the recycling of all obsolete wireless phones and accessories, including cell phone chargers, car adaptors, and batteries. Phones that are old and obsolete are sent to an EPA-certified recycling facility here in the United States. |
